Summer Music

Summer Music at Rivers is a two-week summer program for students entering grades 3-12; however, younger students may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Students of any wind, string, or brass instruments, or piano are welcome to audition. Each session concludes with performances of the chamber groups and large ensembles.

Audition Dates & Requirements
The following audition dates are for 2020 and are subject to change:
February 23, 12 – 6 PM
March 29, 12 – 6 PM
April 26, 12 – 6 PM
May 17, 10 AM – 12 PM & 6 – 9 PM
May 24, 10 AM – 12 PM & 6 – 9 PM
May 31, 10 AM – 12 PM & 6 – 9 PM

Final Audition Date: May 31, 2020

Auditions are held in order to accept and place students in the appropriate large ensemble, classes, and chamber groups. Students will be notified immediately upon acceptance by the Director of Summer Music, as well as in the rare case that a student is wait-listed or cannot be placed.

Students should prepare 1 or 2 pieces that best demonstrate his/her abilities, as well as one scale of their choice. They will also be asked to sight-read a short piece. In lieu of an audition, International or returning students may submit a video.

Chamber Music & Large Ensembles
Each student is placed in a chamber ensemble of 2-5 players of similar ability and rehearse daily with a chamber coach. In the afternoon students participate in either the Senior or Junior String Orchestra (based on level, not age), Summer Wind Ensemble, or Piano Seminar.

Private Instruction
Students receive 4 private lessons per session with an RSC faculty member. Younger students may receive additional structured practice time with a counselor.

Music Theory & Performance Class
In Music Theory Class students explore topics in theory and harmony. Collaboratively, students compose a piece which they perform at the end of the session. The Performance Class is a “masterclass-style” format in which students perform solo and ensemble repertoire for their peers and teachers. Both classes are divided into junior and senior levels.

Lunch & Recreation
Students can take part in a variety of activities, including soccer, softball, kickball, frisbee, whiffleball, and art activities. Daily lunch is also provided.

Early Drop-Off and/or Late Afternoon Pick-Up
We also offer early morning drop-off, which runs from 8:00-9:00 am ($150 per session), and late afternoon pick-up, which runs from 4:00-5:00 pm ($150 per session). This service offers supervised activities. You may choose the morning, the afternoon, or both.

Financial Aid
Limited need-based financial aid is available for summer programs. To apply please complete the application prior to your audition date. Application and complete information can be found on the Financial Aid page.
